'Linda' at Peterborough
The Association of 16mm Narrow Gauge Modellers is delighted to announce that the world famous Ffestiniog Railway locomotive “Linda” will be the full size prototype engine appearing at the show on Saturday 31st March 2012 at the East of England Showground, Peterborough

“Linda” was built in 1893 by the Hunslet Engine Co for the Penrhyn Quarry at a cost of £800 and was subsequently purchased by the Ffestiniog Railway in 1963. Although “Linda” has clocked up many thousands of miles, unlike some preserved locomotives these have been almost exclusively on home turf and her appearance at the National Garden Railway Show will, we believe, be only the second time that “Linda” as a complete locomotive has left Wales since she was delivered back in 1893.

Nigel Town, Chairman of the Association said : “The theme for this year’s show is “Penrhyn at Peterborough” and we are delighted that Linda will be our guest locomotive courtesy of our friends at the Ffestiniog Railway where she has been a hard working performer over many years. We feel she is a worthy ambassador for both railway preservation and the Penrhyn Quarry locomotives, and will make a great centrepiece for the show.”
A Press Release regarding this exciting visitor from North-West Wales to Peterborough is available by clicking here
Penrhyn at Peterborough
The tramways and railways serving the Penrhyn Quarry operations at Bethesda, North Wales, were initially constructed over 200 years ago. The lines around the quarry, the route of the ‘main line’ from Felin Fawr to the sea and the track layout at Port Penrhyn all saw a series of changes over their lifetimes. Steam was introduced to the railways in 1879 and eventually reigned supreme in almost all areas of operation.
But things change and the Penrhyn was no exception. Trains last operated along the main line in 1962. The three remaining main line locos found a new life – ‘Linda’ and ‘Blanche’ on the Ffestiniog Railway and ‘Charles’ in a display at Penrhyn Castle. The smaller locos that survived the scrapman’s torch moved into preservation and many are to be seen on today’s narrow gauge tourist and preserved railways.
Some of the locos were exported for preservation. ‘Edward Sholto’ was repatriated in 2006 and appeared at our show in 2010. ‘Marchlyn’ was repatriated in May this year and is to be returned to working order.
The Penrhyn Quarry Railway Society has been striving for some six years to recreate part of the old railway – renovating the old engine sheds at Felin Fawr and re-laying at least some of the old main line. By 2012 – 50 years since closure of the main line – around a quarter mile of newly-laid main-line track should be operating.
So it seems fitting that the 16mm Association should celebrate the re-birth of the Penrhyn after 50 years – by making the theme of our 2012 show “The Penrhyn at Peterborough”.
During the lifetime of the old Penrhyn, 45 steam locos were in operation at the quarry, on the main line or at the port. We are inviting all members with models of Penrhyn prototypes to bring their models to the show – to operate on either the “Felin Fawr” layout or (for suitably aged models) to run or display on the heritage layout “Phurcombe Hall”.
Many steam loco manufacturers were represented on the old Penrhyn – Henry Hughes, de Winton, Hunslet, Baldwin, Manning Wardle, Kerr Stuart, Bagnall and Avonside were all to be seen at one time or another. Here’s a challenge – can we as an Association get at least one of all these locos to the show (in model form, that is)?
The Penrhyn quarry was also home to an eclectic range of petrol and diesel tractors – many constructed in their own workshops from former road vehicles. Will we see models based around a bull-nosed Morris and a Fordson tractor trundling around our own Felin Fawr?
Bring your own Penrhyn locomotive to run at Peterborough
To celebrate the rebirth of the Penrhyn Quarry Railway 50 years after closure, we invite YOU, the membership of the 16mm Association, to bring your Penrhyn model to show and run. So, if YOU have a 16mm scale model of one of the Penrhyn locomotives we'd like you to bring it to the show and steam it up on 'Felin Fawr'.
To register for this very special event, please click the following link to complete an entry form or see application details by post which will be in February “Bulletin” and the show guide. Please note that as the show is open to the general public, due to insurance restrictions only members of the Association will be able to run locomotives at this event.

Heritage Auction
Association Members can take part in the Heritage Auction, 11.30 next to the heritage display and Phurcombe Hall layout there will be an auction of heritage items. Entries for the auction can range from locos to literature, in fact anything dating from the start of the hobby up to the early 1990’s. Lots, and bids for them, are being accepted from now onwards by emailing Derek Wiggins at heritage@16mm.org.uk and obviously on the day at the show
Member to Member Sales
I have started planning for the Member to Member Sales Stall at our annual get together. The show is on the 31st March 2012, the venue is the Peterborough Showground. If you intend visiting the show and are interested in volunteering to help out on the Member to Member sales stand, then please get in touch either by telephone 07824 643559 or by email mellortrains@yahoo.co.uk. If you can only help for one hour it will be appreciated by everyone on the stall. More than hour and we will be very grateful. The more volunteers we have the less time we all spend working the stall. If you require more details then please get in touch.
If you intend bringing items to sell at the show, then, please read the Rules that are available by clicking here (you can also download a booking-in form from this location). The form needs filling out and sending back to the address shown in the rules prior to the 25th March 2012. This allows items to be entered into the computer system before the big day. If forms are not sent in advance, there will be a delay whilst each item is entered on the system.
Many thanks for your assistance
Paul Mellor

Junior Activity at the Show
Calling all junior members and junior family members!! Do you want to help operate one of the layouts at the show?
Under
parental supervision you
can bring your own loco (gas-fired or battery-electric, 32mm gauge,
only) and/or use one of the battery-electric locos (with train) that
we will provide. You will be operating Dixon Green Light Railway. This layout has
2’6” radius curves, so is suitable for smaller locos. Running must
take place with the consent of a parent and under the supervision of
an adult family member. You can use your own loco only if it is
owned by (and operated with the consent of) someone who is a member
on the day of the show.
To book your place in advance of the show, please email: treasurer@16mm.org.uk Your email should explain what (if any) loco you will be bringing, how long you want to spend operating the layout and the name of the adult family member who will look after you.
Bookings on the day of the show may be possible, but only if there are still places available.
Demonstrations
Help & Advice will be available in the Atrium for most of the day at a series of dedicated tables.
A series of half hourly demonstration sessions will take place in the Help and Advice Theatre area of the main hall.

Steammodelloco 16mm group
The objective of this six year old group is to provide help and advice to prospective steam loco builders. Started in 2005 we presently have about 700 members. We also support kit builders and loco modifiers as well as those undertaking scratch building.

The group was initially formed for those building locomotives designed by Keith Bucklitch namely “Brazil” and “Dennis”. We also now provide support for Dave Watkins designs as well as Brian Wilson’s designs from the book “Steam trains in the Garden”.
We also discuss the workshop machinery used to build these beasts offering guidance for “absolute” beginners, a most important resource!

We will be present at the National Garden Railway Show in Peterborough to demonstrate what can be achieved with a little help and encouragement. We usually have Keith Bucklitch showing what can be done with a small lathe or milling machine and the tooling required plus a large display of completed and part finished models.
Do stop by at our stand and introduce yourself, you will be most welcome.

MODEL OF THE YEAR COMPETITION - INFORMATION FOR ENTRANTS
Models should be between 14 and 22mm to the foot scale, of any gauge below the scale equivalent of 4ft 8.5 inches and narrow gauge in nature. All must be the entrants own work with any purchased items being declared. Locomotives are expected to be in working order.
MOTY classes
Steam locomotives
There are three categories intended principally for steam locomotives:
The Allcomers Locomotive Cup is intended to show off the very best locomotive models. Previous winners of the Jack Wheldon Trophy and equivalent, or professionally built models are the only quality expected in this class.
The Jack Wheldon Memorial Trophy is for fully or partly scratch built locomotives.
The Roundhouse Trophy is for steam locos built principally using Roundhouse components.
Non-steam locomotives
Internal combustion engined loco models that are battery powered qualify for the Butterley Trophy.
However steam outline, models of an electric or air powered locomotive or something else enter the Andrew Neale Challenge Cup.
Lineside trophy
Lineside items buildings, bridges, signals railway track itself and railway related road vehicles compete in the Lineside Trophy class.
Rolling stock
The two classes are:
The Imp Passenger Stock Shield. For the purposes of this competition passenger vehicles are defined as those which are capable of, or built primarily to convey persons. The traditional railway concept of “paying passengers” is not what we mean.
The Rolling Stock Trophy is for non-passenger carrying vehicles. This will obviously include such things as permanent way vehicles, as well as goods vehicles.
If entering these two classes, no more than 12 axles per entry, please.
The Gordon Diplock Trophy
Is for unusual, imaginative or whimsical models, which in general will not be of of anything that really existed!
Younger classes
Members aged under 18 are eligible for the Junior Cup regardless of the nature of their model. In addition their models will be entered into the appropriate main category. In the case of younger members a degree of adult assistance is acceptable.
Layouts class
For the second year running we will be having an award for the best layout at the show, which will be decided by the visitors to the show. Votes can be cast using the form in the show guide, which can be placed in the "ballot box" on the MOTY display area.
Penrhyn Railway award
For 2012 only, there will be an award for the best model representing the Penrhyn Railway. This is not a separate class, but the award could be made to a model entered into any of the existing classes, which might also win that class, as well as the special Penrhyn award! Don't forget, this model could be a loco, rolling stock, a lineside item or anything that fits into the other classes.
Entry Information
If your proposed entry is particularly large or heavy, please let us know in advance. This is vital for anything larger than the 1800mm x 600mm tables, which would have to be planned for in advance. If you bring in something huge without prior arrangement, we might unfortunately have to refuse it entry, and we don't want to do that!
You will be able to book in your MOTY entry from 9 a.m. at the booking- in desk in the atrium to save you from having to queue before 10:00 clutching your handiwork. After the show has opened, just bring it to the MOTY stand for booking in. When you book in, you will be given a receipt for your model, it is absolutely vital that you bring this back to reclaim your model, please do not try to just walk up and remove it after the event without speaking to the MOTY staff. Some models will be security protected, and we don’t want alarms going off all over the place! This also means that if you have won something, and missed the announcement, we can give you your award when you collect your model
To allow adequate time for photography, judging and the displaying of entries, the closing time for entering models is 11:00
Additional written or photographic details of your model will be most welcome. It helps the judges and the Editor of SMT who will be on the lookout for magazine material
To speed up the process on the day you can download an entry form for the competition by clicking the link below, filling it in and bringing it with you on the day
If you have any queries on MOTY issues, please contact the MOTY organiser William Bickers-Jones as soon as possible on william.bickers-jones@ntlworld.com or telephone and leave a message on 023 9226 3462 (email is definitely preferred). Please note, William is away from home for ALL of February, so please try to make contact (if you need to) before that, or forward your enquiry to Nigel Town, our Chairman, if you really do have an urgent enquiry during February
It is also helpful if you could email William to indicate your intention to enter a model, and in which class, to enable us to do our best to plan the display space in advance. We usually end up completely rearranging the display more than once in the first hour, and we’d really prefer not to move your models around more than necessary!
Now, out with those modelling tools, and get creative….

Please note that the above form can be filled in on your PC and then printed out

Catering Arrangements
We know we'll never please everyone with the arrangements for food and drink, but we're going to give it a good try.
So, if you arrive early, from 9.00 you can get a bacon butty and hot drink for your breakfast. Of course, we can't guarantee when the butties will sell out, so don't expect an all-day breakfast!
Later, you'll be able to have a "knife and fork" sit-down lunch in the Peterborough restaurant - with beer and wine for any who want to indulge.
Or use the cafe in the Atrium, serving hot and cold drinks, sandwiches and cold snacks until mid-afternoon - with small tables to sit at.
And in the main hall, we'll have another grab'n go coffee point - no tables here, but we WILL have lots of chairs spread round the hall, and don’t miss “Ask the Expert” the new lunch time “thoughts with food” event – bring along your questions and your food.
