Association Diary

Our large scale trains are very appealing to members of the public, especially when they realise that the live steam locomotives are not being powered by electricity and that their speed and direction are being set either by radio control or manually. Portable 16mm scale layouts, many of them fully scenic, are based in most parts of Great Britain and our volunteer members take them to exhibitions and events throughout the year. A variety of live steam and battery powered locomotives can be operated on them. Most of the steam locomotives are gas fired and can produce atmospheric steam plumes even indoors. These locomotives are very clean to run and do not pollute the average size exhibition hall with gas, oil or smoke. They do not set off smoke alarms or heat sensors and they can even be operated successfully in school classrooms.
If you would like to invite a 16mm scale layout to your exhibition or event, we might be able to help you contact the manager of a suitable layout. Please e-mail at publicity.officer@16mm.org.uk with details of your requirements.

Layouts:
There are two separate running
tracks, with adequate clearances on the 45mm gauge track to
accommodate large American 1:20.3 narrow gauge models.
The 45mm track allows for three separate circuits to be
in use simultaneously.
On the 32mm track, whilst this is only a single circuit,
it is not uncommon to have up to three trains running at any one
time.
Additional Info:
These are open to modellers who wish to run on our 32mm gauge, 45mm gauge,
2 1/2", 3 1/2" and 5" gauge tracks.
Boiler certificates are required for locomotives with
Bar/Litre values greater than 3.0BL.
(The Bar/Litre value is the working pressure in Bars,
multiplied by the boiler volume in
Litres.)
The vast majority of 16mm scale and gauge one locomotives
fall well below this value. Therefore, normally, only a safety
check of the locomotive, by the track marshall will be required
before running. All members of the Association are invited to
attend with their locomotives and rolling stock.
2012 is the 30th Anniversary Year of the Society and we
shall be planning special events during the year to celebrate.
Further details will be published in due course. Please
contact Keith Bucklitch if you wish to attend, or for directions
to our track site.
